8 Nutritional Philosophies to Live By

Last month, I mentioned how I’ve been working with a business mentor to refine my plans, goals, and strategies for my coaching business. A big part of that is outlining the why behind what I do—what knowledge and beliefs shape the support I offer my clients and our community? These aren’t new revelations; they’ve guided my work from the beginning, however, I think putting my approach and philosophy into words is a great way to invite you to be more than a consumer of what I offer—it’s an opportunity to walk together on the road to becoming the best versions of ourselves.

My upcoming blog series will explore each of my philosophies (fitness, nutrition, and emotional/spiritual well-being) in depth. For October, we’re kicking things off by talking about nutrition.

My nutrition philosophy is centered around functional nutrition. Nutrition is a journey—you can't learn, know or change everything at once and we all come to the proverbial table with different backgrounds & experiences around food. Nutrition is about first educating yourself about healthy foods and ingredients and then making sustainable tweaks as you apply what you learn. It's also about learning YOUR body and tuning into your body's cues and signals—the appropriate calorie allowance & macro ratio based on your life season - along with food sensitivities and trends and triggers for you. It's not about perfection; it's about balance and developing overall healthy eating patterns or eating healthy most of the time with room for the flexibility real life requires.

I like to say my approach to nutrition is about feeling confident about what to choose/eat whether you are at the ballpark, in the drive-through line, on vacation, or at a family gathering or holiday meal. I accomplish this by:

  • Teaching women HOW to eat for optimal health and wellness, including healthy weight maintenance

  • Helping women know WHAT to eat, how much to eat & how to enjoy healthy foods (pairing quantity and quality)

  • Incremental and sustainable changes that meet you where you are and help you learn why and how to make healthier choices that fit into your already full and busy lifestyle.

  • Understanding that God made us to eat; we get to choose what to eat.

  • Learning to ENJOY healthy foods and finding balance. Not perfection.

  • Addition over restriction. Adding IN the good stuff to your diet without completely eliminating treats and indulgences.

  • Proper nutrition leads to gut health—which is directly connected to our mental health. This also includes building a strong immune system to minimize sickness.

  • Proper nutrition leads to optimal functioning, especially when paired with quality sleep, exercise & stress management.

We are whole people - an interconnected body, mind & soul - and by learning to properly care for and fuel our bodies, we are more free to live life to the fullest.
